There’s never a dull moment for FBC Member Maggie Gervais.

Gervais lives in McLennan, Alberta and volunteers for more than 7 organizations in her community while working part-time at Canada Post.

She recently retired from a full-time position at the Government of Alberta, but that hasn’t slowed her down – she volunteers even more of her time.

Volunteering has always brought meaning and joy to her life.

“I’ve always loved working in the community and now I have more time to do and give more,” Gervais says. “This was my lifetime passion.”

Gervais was recently recognized for her dedication to her community. She was one of 6 volunteers presented with a prestigious award by the Government of Alberta in December 2019.

The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award recognizes “extraordinary Albertans whose volunteer efforts have contributed to the well-being of their community and fellow community members.”

She was nominated by the mayor of McLennan.

“I was very surprised and at the same time honoured to receive this beautiful award,” Gervais says. “I share this award with the community.”

Gervais has been volunteering with Royal Purple for more than 30 years, an organization that supports children and seniors.

She takes the lead role in organizing many local events, from Winter Festival to Royal Purple’s Walk for Children.

As a volunteer with the Manoir Du Lac Integrated Life Care Facility, she helps with fundraising events and visits residents.

She also dedicates her time to the Northern Alberta Historical Railway Museum and was instrumental in bringing a historical railway station into McLennan.

Plus, Gervais is a treasurer for the McLennan Leisure and Recreation Society and assists with many beautification efforts in the community.

“What motivates me is wanting to help and to make our community a better place to be in,” Gervais says. “The people are my main focus… their generosity, positive attitude and the friendship we built.”

For anyone who wants to get involved in their community, Gervais encourages them to come to a board meeting or help with a project and see if it’s a fit for them.

When she’s not volunteering, Gervais is spending time with her family and friends. She celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary this year, and has 3 children, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren!

When Maggie thinks about the future, she doesn’t want to slow down her volunteer work.

“My goals/dreams is to continue to give back and make our community a great place to live.”

Gervais first joined FBC with her husband when they owned a small business: “They were very professional and answered all our questions and had great advice to help us. We have now retired from the business but we are still with FBC for our personal tax. Always very friendly and well treated.”
