Livestock Producers in Areas of Drought/Too Much Moisture Get Tax Help
September 2009

The federal government is offering 2009 tax deferrals to livestock producers who have been dealing with drought in designated areas of BC’s central interior, central Alberta and west central Saskatchewan and designated areas of excess moisture in the Interlake Region of central Manitoba.

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced on July 22, 2009 that producers who resorted to selling off eligible livestock to avoid financial losses due to drought or excess moisture conditions will be eligible for a one-year tax deferral on 2009 income from those sales.

Producers who reduced their breeding herds by at least 15 percent are eligible. Thirty percent of income from net sales can be deferred if the herd has been reduced by at least 15 percent, but less than 30 percent. Where the herd has been reduced by 30 percent or more, 90 percent of income from net sales can be deferred.

On September 8, 2009, the federal government announced an expansion of its initial list of 2009 designated drought-affected areas to include 47 census subdivisions in BC’s central interior, 28 communities in central Alberta and 8 RMs in west central Saskatchewan.

The following list contains designated drought/excess moisture areas for 2009 announced to date.
